Passing through Deep Waters

Isaiah 43:2 - “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle thee.

When the prophet Isaiah wrote this book, Israel was facing significant challenges, including the threat of invasion and exile. The Israelites had become corrupt, and God was poised to remove them from His sight. The Israelites experienced two remarkable events related to passing through waters: the Red Sea crossing and the Jordan River crossing. When they fled Egypt, they faced the Red Sea with no apparent escape. God miraculously parted the waters, allowing them to walk through dry ground. After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, they reached the Jordan River. Again, God intervened, stopping the river’s flow so they could cross into the Promised Land. Prophet Isaiah’s words carried immense weight and urgency which provides hope and reassurance to them.

Isaiah 43:2 is a powerful verse that speaks of God’s unwavering presence and protection for His people. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you,” refers to the times of difficulty, trials, and adversity. Whether facing literal floods or metaphorical storms, God promises to be with you and me. He won’t abandon us during our struggles. “And through the rivers, they will not overflow you.” means that even when the challenges seem overwhelming, God assures us that we won’t be consumed by the floodwaters. His presence acts as a protective barrier. “When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.” Here, fire symbolizes intense trials, suffering, or persecution. God’s promise here is remarkable. His presence shield you and me from harm, even in the midst of fiery trials.

Have you ever experienced to pass through deep waters? What do deep waters mean to us? Deep water symbolize the unknown, and when we find ourselves loaded with life’s problems, fear and anxiety arise. We may wonder if we’ll survive or how we’ll navigate the depths. Water can be isolating when we are surrounded by vast, dark waves and we feel so small and insignificant; as if no one understands our struggles. Water exerts pressure making movement difficult. When we pass through deep waters, we encounter resistance. It’s a struggle to keep going, to stay afloat, and not be overwhelmed.

But let us remember that when we pass through deep waters, God promises to be with us.Just as God led the Israelites through the parted waters, He guides and directs us in our life. Even when we face consequences due to our sins and unrighteousness, God remains merciful, He forgives and restores us. He allows only what serves our ultimate good and His glory. Like the parted waters, God can make a way when there seems to be none. Let us trust God at all times to split the waters for us. Nothing can separate us from God’s love and when we call upon His name through Jesus Christ, our Savior, He draws near.

Passing through deep waters doesn’t guarantee smooth sailing - but it offers growth, persistence and the assurance that we’re not alone. Passing through deep waters can change us - teaching resilience, empathy and compassion. We emerge different, shaped by the journey in passing through life, because God is with us. Passing through deep water also signifies challenges, but with God’s presence, protection and love, we can navigate even the most turbulent seas,
