Surrendering to God’s Will: Understanding His Perfect Plan

Feb 23, 2024

Proverbs 19:21 - “There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall prevail.”

Isaiah 46:10 - “ Declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and it will do all my pleasure.”

Even though we may have our own plans and desires, ultimately, God’s purpose and plan are absolute. Proverbs 19:21 tells us that surrendering to His will allows us to find peace and trust in His perfect design for our lives. God is ruling and over-ruling from heaven alone, fulfilling His eternal purpose, not only in spite of, but also by means of, His enemies

Isaiah 46:10 emphasizes God’s sovereignty and foreknowledge. It reveals that God knows the future as well as the past and His plans are unshakable. His counsel stands firm, and He accomplishes His desire according to His will. God’s eternal counsel remains steadfast, and His paramount will shall prevail throughout history. This verse beautifully echoes the message of surrendering our plans to His unchanging purpose.

The biblical characteristic of surrender is a transformative act—one that involves yielding oneself fully to the will and authority of God. It’s not about weakness; rather, it’s a courageous step of conviction and obedience. When we surrender, we relinquish our own desires, plans, and control, embracing God’s perfect purposes for our lives.

What is surrender? In Romans 12:1, the apostle Paul writes, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your acceptable service.”(Romans 12:1) which is your spiritual worship. This verse calls us to offer our entire being as a living sacrifice to God. It’s an acknowledgment of His mercies and a wholehearted surrender to His purposes.

Jesus Himself exemplified surrender in the Garden of Gethsemane before His crucifixion. He prayed, “Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42). In that moment, Jesus demonstrated the ultimate act of surrender, submitting Himself to the Father’s will and plan for His life.

How can we develop an attitude of surrender in our own lives? Here are some guiding steps:

First: Recognize God’s sovereignty by understanding that God is the Creator and Lord of all things. Surrender begins with acknowledging His authority and yielding to His plans and purposes.

Second: Seek God’s will through prayer by regularly spending time in prayer, seeking God’s guidance and surrendering our desires and plans to His perfect will. Let us remember Jesus’ words: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).

Third: Trust in God’s wisdom and goodness by developing trust in God’s character and His plans for your life. Our surrender requires faith in His wisdom, knowing that His ways are higher than our own (Proverbs 3:5-6); and

Fourth: Let go of control by releasing our desire for control and allow God to be the driver of our life. Surrender also involves humbly accepting that God’s ways and timing are perfect (Proverbs 16:9).

Let us always remember to yield to God’s will knowing that our surrender to God isn’t a defeat, but it is an invitation to a victorious and abundant life in Christ.
