My personal Thanksgiving message to all! The True Spirit of Thanksgiving

Nov 27, 2025

Thanksgiving has finally arrived. During this period, families worldwide are diligently preparing elaborate and sumptuous dinners to commemorate this annual tradition, complete with all customary trimmings.

This week, it has been reported that President Trump has once again issued an unconditional pardon to a turkey scheduled for sacrifice during the celebration. This practice has added to the excitement of the festivities.

Thanksgiving also signifies the start of another widely anticipated holiday—Christmas. In Western countries, this marks the start of the Christmas season, whereas in the Philippines, it begins in September.

The most eagerly awaited event is not merely the celebration itself but Black Friday—a day dedicated to shopping wherein retailers offer substantial discounts to facilitate Christmas purchases. Stores often remain open until midnight or even later.

However, amid all this excitement, there appears to be a missing spirit within these celebrations. Despite the emotions, festivities, decorations, and expenditures, the true essence remains absent. The focus of the occasion is diverted from its fundamental purpose. The commercialization of the holiday has overshadowed its genuine meaning. Regrettably, celebrations proceed without acknowledgment of the one who provides the true reason to celebrate.

We need to put Jesus Christ—not only into Christmas but also into Thanksgiving and throughout the entire year. Isn't it the primary purpose of these celebrations to express gratitude? Every occasion should serve as a recognition of thankfulness:

- New Year: to thank God for new beginnings

- Valentine's Day: to thank God for His love

- Independence Day: to thank God for our freedom

- Birthdays: to thank God for life

- Anniversaries: to thank God for ongoing blessings and opportunities

- Memorial Day: to thank God for those who fought for our freedom

- Christmas: to thank God for sending His Son

- Thanksgiving Day: to thank God for His abundant blessings

Our gratitude is not solely for gifts or favors received from others; it is ultimately for the God who cares for and sustains us. Thanksgiving is not merely about the gift itself but about the divine source of all gifts, blessings, and grace: our God, our Lord, and Savior, Jesus Christ. As He is God incarnate, worshipping Him in thanksgiving is an act of worship directed to the triune God.

The essence of thanksgiving begins and concludes with God. It is not contingent upon any gift or favor but upon our God, who deserves our worship and praise. Thanksgiving is an act of worship; it is an act of faith, an attitude that all should embrace. Let us exalt and adore God with hearts!

A blessed and Happy Thanksgiving to all!
