Jesus Christ, The Mighty God
Dr. J. Hernes M. Abante
Isaiah 9:6 - “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
In Isaiah 9:6, the word "mighty" clearly shows the king's leadership role. The original Hebrew adjective suggests “a person who has or shows great power in authority and military leadership, marking them as heroic and brave.”
As the Mighty God of Israel, the Messiah will be a fearless and commanding leader, ruling over the nation's armies. Unlike any king before Him, He will be the divine hero and champion defender, “For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward.” (Deuteronomy 10:17:)
Throughout history, people have often sought a strong, heroic leader to bring about change and free them from oppression. Yet Jesus introduced a different kind of leadership—one based on humility and service to others.
He came to us as a human, willingly setting aside His divine status to become a servant. His teachings remind us that true strength and power come not from dominating others but from loving and caring for them.
The "Mighty God" of Isaiah's prophecy will be fully revealed in Christ's second coming. In every part of His life and ministry, from His conception (Luke 1:35, 49) to His ascension (Luke 24:50–51), Jesus operated with divine power and authority, full of compassion and humility.
People testified that Jesus was "a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people” (Luke 24:19; see also Acts 7:22). His mighty deeds demonstrated "the Lord's healing power" (Luke 5:17).
When Jesus cast out demons and unclean spirits, He proved that He is both divine and mighty, working under the Father’s authority and power (Luke 4:36; Mark 1:32, 34). The apostle Paul said, “Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:” Acts 2:22
Christ's supernatural acts proved that Jesus is the Mighty God.
The resurrection is the strongest proof that Jesus is Israel's Mighty God, operating in His Father's power and authority. Jesus, who had the power to lay down His life and take it again (John 10:18), humbly submitted to death on the cross (2 Corinthians 13:4; Philippians 2:5-8).
“But then God demonstrated His great power, “And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,”- Ephesians 1:19-22 KJV
Jesus Christ, as the Mighty God, rose from the dead and now sits at the Father’s right hand in heaven, above every other authority, power, and leader. The Bible says God granted Jesus authority over all people to give eternal life to those given Him by the Father (John 17:2; see also John 10:28; 1 John 2:25).
At the end of the age, Jesus Christ will come again to earth "with power and great glory" (Matthew 24:30). When Jesus returns, Isaiah's vision of a Mighty God and King will be fulfilled. Jesus will hand over the kingdom to His heavenly Father after destroying every enemy of God, marking His role in the plan of redemption (1 Corinthians 15:24-25).
As the Mighty God, Jesus will judge all people on earth (Revelation 18:8, 10). Then He will sit on His eternal throne and reign with great power and authority (Revelation 11:15–17; 12:10). Every creature in heaven and on earth will bow and worship Him.
Heaven will ring with the shout: “Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the world, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever.” (Revelation 5:12-13.)
Jesus Christ is our Mighty God, not as a lesser God, but as the same God who will someday reign physically as a God-man to manifest His mighty acts and wonders in the coming Kingdom. He is equal to the Father as the Triune God, but in the work of redemption, He humbled and submitted Himself to the Father’s will.
