Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace
Isaiah 9:6 - “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
The name "Prince of Peace" is not just a title. It significantly reflects the character and authority of Jesus Christ. Unlike other human rulers who rely on violent conquest to establish their reign, His authority rests on His sacrificial death. This sets Him apart as the true source of peace, removing all factors that disturb peace and securing enduring peace.
Jesus disappointed the nation of Israel, which was not expecting a peaceful prince. Instead, they wanted a monarch who would destroy their enemies and restore Israel’s former glory, like during Solomon's reign. They demanded the removal of Rome and all its oppressors.
It is an undeniable fact that Jesus never engaged in military action against Rome, nor did He sign any peace treaties. It was difficult to understand how He could be rightfully recognized as the Prince of anything.
His first coming aimed to establish peace with God and offer it to people from all nations. The New Testament also affirms that He will return to bring peace to the earth.
Paul declares that the first phase of the Messiah's arrival brought a peace unknown to humanity since the fall of man. This peace is rooted in the salvational mission Christ carried out on our behalf. In his writings, Paul states, "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:19)
The peace Jesus provides through His work on the cross is not just a ceasefire between God and us. It is a powerful peace that transforms us from enemies of God into His beloved children. The Father was pleased to reconcile all things to Himself through Jesus, making peace through the blood of His cross. Even if we were once alienated and hostile in our minds because of wicked works, Jesus has already reconciled us. The Prince of Peace has given us the incredible opportunity to have peace with God.
For a believer in Christ, the name "Prince of Peace" holds great significance. It is the divine title given to Jesus in the Bible, symbolizing His role as the ultimate source of peace and reconciliation between God and humanity.
This title embodies the promise of everlasting peace, both inward and outward, for those who follow Christ's teachings and believe in His divine nature. The name "Prince of Peace" reminds believers of the hope and comfort found in their faith, knowing that their ultimate salvation and eternal peace are secured through trust in Jesus.
Isaiah foretold the coming of a Messiah, who would be our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. When Jesus Christ came into the world, He fulfilled all those prophecies, proving He was the Messiah. He was God in human flesh, revealing His deity and redeeming humanity.
And based on His ability to fulfill all these promises, He declared, “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” This is the essence of the Christian faith: Jesus Christ is God, sent to rescue lost humanity. May we give Him our complete devotion and reflect on the greatness of God that He is, for He brings peace wherever He reigns!
