Faith of Our Mothers

May 23, 2023

If there is anyone who could mostly express love, care, and attention towards children, is the mother. This is the message that the Apostle Paul was referencing to in his letter to Timothy, his son in the faith.

Here, Paul recognized the work and the result of the true faith that started with the grandmother, Lois, who then transferred the same spiritual care to her daughter, Eunice, the mother of Timothy.

Lois and Eunice are the best example of a faithful and loving mother, who believes that the most important need of a child is the feeding of God’s Word and the need to have a personal relationship with God.

These are two generations of mothers whose faith fully rested on the Lord. They were mothers, who spent time and effort in raising, guiding, and leading Timothy to love, believe, and obey God’s Word. This is real faith - a faith that is not only heard but clearly seen by man. It is a faith that transforms man to live and serve God. Clearly, the Apostle Paul witnessed this same faith in Timothy’s life.

In today’s generation, faith is more heard than seen. We are more concerned about what we profess and believe, instead of showing it in our lives. It is more of a “professing faith.” The right intention is there and the words are clear, but still short, because there is no solid and observable evidence in life and work.

We constantly hear parents expressing in words on how they want to see their children love and serve God. The problem is, are we, as parents leading and showing our children to love and live for God? Are we good examples of living a holy life and service?

I remember a song title that says this thought, “What you are speaks so loud, that the world (children) can’t hear what you say.” If what we say does not agree with what we do, it will not take much effect. It is because our children are more observant than to listen.

I praise and thank God for mothers, who, despite difficulty and busy schedule, still find time to inspire and show their children how to love, live, and serve God. They are the mothers who show by example! Apostle Paul calls it the “unfeigned faith.” This is the true faith that yields precious fruits of holy living and good works.

Lesson/Application:

We have many mothers who really care. They believe that the spiritual need of their children is most important. They have the right intention and concern. However, if their desires for their children are only expressed in words and not modeled in life and action, there is no power because it is not faith. For “faith without works is dead.” It means that we we say will never communicate truths.

The Apostle Paul calls this “unfeigned faith” that he saw in Timothy’s life. It was first seen in his grandmother Lois. And this “unfeigned faith” Lois also showed to her daughter, Eunice, who then showed it to Timothy, her son.

Remember, “that without faith (not the empty words, but the exercise of it), it is impossible to please God….”

Hebrews 11:6 KJV

[6] But without faith it is impossible to please him : for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
