I Am Standing on the Promises of God

Hebrews 10:23-24 - “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.”

Written by apostle Paul, Hebrews 10:23-24 encourage believers to hold on to God’s promises, remain steadfast in faith, persevere in faith and mutual love, especially as we anticipate the “Day” of the Lord’s return. It exhorts us to maintain a strong communal faith and to provoke one another to acts of love and good works, especially in the face of trials and persecutions. It also reflects a pastoral concern for the spiritual well-being of the believers, urging us to remain steadfast in the hope promised by God, who is faithful. This verse best aligns with the theme of the song “I Am Standing on the Promises of God.”

The song was written by Russell Kelso Carter in 1891, beautifully expresses our confidence in God’s promises. He was a man of faith and resilience, penned the hymn as a heartfelt testimony to the unwavering faithfulness of the Almighty. Russell Kelso Carter accepted Christ at a young age and later pursued a degree in civil engineering. He became a professor of chemistry and mathematics at the Pennsylvania Military Academy. At just 30 years old, Carter faced a health crisis related to his heart. The doctors offered no hope, leaving him near death. In his desperate state, Carter turned to God for comfort and healing. He made a solemn promise to serve the Lord faithfully, regardless of the outcome.

Miraculously, God answered Carter’s prayers for healing. He not only survived but went on to live for 49 more years! Carter’s commitment to God remained steadfast. He eventually became a medical doctor himself. Filled with gratitude, he composed this hymn as his personal declaration of God’s faithfulness in his life:

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,

Through eternal ages let His praises ring,

Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,

Standing on the promises of God.

Refrain:

Standing, standing,

Standing on the promises of God my Savior;

Standing, standing,

I’m standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,

When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,

By the living Word of God I shall prevail,

Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of God is a powerful and comforting stance for all of us as believers. When we stand on God’s promises, we rely on His unwavering faithfulness. He is consistent, dependable, and true to His word. As Psalm 145:13 says, “The Lord is faithful to all His promises.”

Standing on God’s promises provides us with strength and support. In times of doubt, fear, or adversity, we can lean on His promises for encouragement. Isaiah 41:10 assures us, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you.”

God’s promises guide our paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in the Lord and acknowledge Him in all our ways, and He will direct our steps.

When storms of doubt and fear assail us, standing on God’s promises allows us to prevail. His promises are like an anchor that keeps us steady. Romans 8:37 reminds us, “In all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

God promises to be with us always. Whether in good times or hard times, we can trust that He walks alongside us. Deuteronomy 31:6 assures, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you.” God’s promises are not empty words. They carry the weight of His character and love. Do we always remember God’s promises? Are we standing on them daily? Standing on them means believing that He will fulfill what He has spoken. IICorinthians 1:20 declares, “For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him.” Let us claim God’s promises!
