Jesus Christ, our Best Friend Forever

May 21, 2023

In today’s devotion, allow me to share with you an original poem written by a friend that I will name here Steven Lew. He sent this to me yesterday, dedicated to a friend the Lord gave him.

He is also my friend. To me, he became like a son and before Pandemic, he was my client in my counseling practice for several years due to the abuses he suffered growing up as a child.

Steven Lew loves the Lord but life as he knows it is full of challenges and difficulties. Because of the past abuses, he developed a mental illness. He was diagnosed with Severe Anxiety Disorder, has bouts of paranoia, feels alone, unwanted, and unloved.  He has developed a Bipolar disorder and in Psychotropic medications for many years.

Friendship, based on his life experience, seems unfulfilled and elusive. He finds it difficult to trust. His manic depressive state makes him constantly afraid that he cannot trust and feels that he should not be trusted.

I find his poem powerful and inspiring because he expresses that true friendship does exist. It begins with Christ, our BFF (Best Friend Forever). In his poem, to have a true and great friend, it should be a friend given by God.

For years, Steven Lew could not find fulfillment and satisfaction in human friendship, even how much he tried. Praise God he got saved and Jesus has become his only Friend. In solitude, Christ is enough for him. The Lord’s spiritual presence has been his only source of inspiration and motivation.

Jesus, being his best Friend, made Steven realized that there is always someone who has always been there for him, and one who never gives up, despite being rejected. This friend is a person who understands and has been patiently reaching out, but because of Steven’s mental condition, he does not recognize the pure intention coming from a true friend.

Lesson/Application:

When you find yourself without a true friend, never seek the friendship of the world. Do not compromise your faith and moral values just because you need someone to call a friend. Look unto Jesus for He can be your true Friend. He then will introduce you to many good friends. It is because as your Best Friend, Jesus Christ will not allow you or anyone of His friends not to enjoy true, healthy, and godly friendship in this life.

Do not focus on what you think or feel you lack, such as a friend. If you have Jesus Christ, know that He is always there in you as your Friend, who is closer than a brother. In His time, Jesus will point you to someone you thought was not a friend. He is someone who has been there for you all the time. One who does not give up but patiently waiting for your eyes to open and for you to realize that he is the physical friend you have been longing for!

“My Best Friend”

By Steven Lew

I’ve searched high and low. I’ve almost given up.

I can’t find one here, there or anywhere…

In the tough coldness of the night I then began to give up the fight… “God, is there truly a friend out there for me?”

Years came and seasons went by…

And along with every heavy sigh as dark nights drew nigh…

“O Lord is there a friend out there to comfort and help me along this narrow road”

Yes, I know I have a Friend in Jesus and that will always be true…

But when I wasn’t expecting it, the Lord answered loud and clear…

“I have a dear friend just for you!

He is always there, patiently waiting for you…

He has quietly helped many people like you without tooting his horn.”

“Your friend has held the Sacred Book and preached it with all he’s got.

Guess what is his name? You will know for he is always there.”

“O Lord you’ve answered my prayer.”

But why did It take time and distance, It took pain and sorrow, even long nights of waiting that I thought there is no tomorrow.

Thank God, there he is! The friend the Lord gave me.

And I can’t deny, my good friend was always there by my side.

Patiently hoping, quietly watching,

Lovingly longing, but confidently waiting…

That God will let me know him as my friend in His time.

You might be wondering and may not even know the good and dear friend God has chosen for you…

Only ask God for He will reveal and meet your friend who is priceless above every pearl…

Treasure that friend, for in Christ you’ll be together with HIM forever more.!
