Blessings!
Blessings come in many ways and forms but only the righteous and the faithful will benefit from them. I mentioned the word “benefit” because God blesses all the time. He sends blessings even if we are not right with God. He can bless us or He can bless others through us - in the same manner God can use anybody to bless those He wants to bless.
How many times have we experienced being blessed through a stranger or from someone or circumstances we did not expect. I remember once when I was about to cross a toll bridge in Vallejo for a Home Bible Study, I realized too late that I did not have any cash with me. As I was getting closer to the bridge I started praying that somehow the toll person will either allow me through or accept a credit card. When it was my turn to pay, the toll booth person gestured for me to proceed because the driver before me paid my toll. What a blessing! God does not have to qualify the instrument but it is certain that He qualifies the recipient.
The purpose of blessings is not only for us to be blessed. It is God’s intention to bless others through us. When this happens God is blessed for He gets the glory! The reason why sometimes we do not enjoy His blessings is because our heart is not right! Perhaps, because we want to covet the blessings only for self.
Lesson/Application:
Our verse today talks about a blessing that oftentimes we take for granted because it is little. We get so preoccupied with the amount, volume, or the number of blessings. This perspective makes us question, why God? We forget that it is already a blessed privilege to be given the opportunity to live and serve God. More so if the blessing comes abundantly.
The psalmist also helps us not to only focus on the blessings we have yet to receive. We have to also consider what we already have and possess as continuous blessings. This is called contentment. This is an important truth we should realize. Let us not only count them as blessings when they come. This is the reason why in spite of all the things we already have and possess, they are considered nothing or little to us. It is because we want more and we focus more on what we think we deserve to receive.
Remember that everything that comes from God is a blessing and it carries eternal value. All blessings should last forever spiritually. We can only begin to understand this truth when our focus is only on the Jesus. The unrighteous and the wicked cannot understand this but the believers or the righteous should.
God’s blessings are not like instant or fast food that are only enjoyed at the moment and short-lived. His blessings are eternal, and their benefits are plenty and progressive. They help us learn, grow, and mature in our faith. They encourage us to share and extend these blessings to others. He wants us to be a blessing to others with the same blessings we receive from God.
Conclusion:
Let us not look at the size of the blessing and do not count it a blessing only when it comes. Blessings may seem little or few but if the blessing is of God, what we see is only the “tip of the iceberg,” so to speak. It is because there are more blessings ahead that are coming that we have yet to discover and enjoy.
For the saved and the righteous, there are more glorious blessings coming. On the other hand, the unbelievers or the unrighteous can only enjoy the riches temporarily because these riches do not have spiritual and eternal value.
This must behoove all of us believers to appreciate whatever blessings we have and will receive. We must be mindful, not on the amount or number of blessings, but mindful of the Blesser!
