A Messenger To Prepare The Way Of The Lord

Feb 10, 2024

Malachi 3:1 - “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.”

Malachi emerged during a time of great turmoil and doubt among the people. They struggled to believe in God's love and focused solely on their misfortunes while ignoring their sinful deeds.

Despite the temple being rebuilt, the people showed little interest in the things of God, leading to rampant corruption among the priesthood and a widespread spiritual lethargy among the people.

God used Malachi to point out their flaws and shortcomings, calling them to take accountability for their actions and reminding them of their covenant with God on Mount Sinai. Malachi urged the people to serve God faithfully, as their forefathers had promised, to bring about the changes they hoped for.

He mainly addressed the priests who had turned away from the Lord and were not taking the sacrifices they made to God seriously. They were sacrificing animals with defects, even though the law required animals without any blemish. The men of Judah were unfaithful to their wives and wondered why God was not accepting their sacrifices.

Additionally, people were not giving their tithes as they should have. However, despite the people's disobedience and turning away from God, Malachi reinforced God's love for His people and promises of a coming Messenger.

Through Malachi, God warned His people to turn back to Him. As the Old Testament drew close, the Israelites heard the promise of God's justice and restoration through the coming Messiah.

For four hundred years, there was silence until God's next prophet, John the Baptist, delivered a similar message of repentance and proclaimed that the kingdom of heaven was at hand. John was the messenger prophesied by Malachi to prepare the way for the Lord, inspiring all to turn to God and seek His grace.

Our Prayer for today:

We acknowledge You, our merciful God, for Your unwavering love towards Your people despite their disobedience and repeated wrongdoings. We are grateful for Your love that is unconditional, even when we grieve You because of our sins. Thank You for sending Your son to rescue us and entrusting us with the responsibility of sharing Your precious gospel, just like John the Baptist. May we always be faithful messengers of Your grace and love. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, and Savior. Amen!
