If There Be Any PRAISE

Philippians 4:8 - “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Apostle Paul’s last instruction combines all the virtues he considers Praiseworthy. All these must saturate and guard our minds to help us stay away from sin and avoid making impulsive and emotionally reactive decisions. These praiseworthy virtues will allow us to be thoughtful and process our thoughts carefully.

Strong defines “Praiseworthy” as

“approbation, a commendable thing, laudation or commendation.” They are things and actions deserving of our commendation and worthy of honor and praise. It is similar to giving a standing ovation for an excellent performance or a job well done.

In today’s generation, people no longer use praise or commendation appropriately. Because of the influence of Hollywood and social media, commendation or praise is mainly given to recognize one’s popularity and personal accomplishments, far removed from integrity and godliness.

Praiseworthiness must commend proper behavior and moral uprightness. It is expressed to magnify moral excellence and godly behavior. So, anything praiseworthy must manifest the character of the Savior.

Considering the other virtues mentioned in our text, it is right to say what should be occupying our minds daily, especially when we face difficulties.

Being praiseworthy is not only manifesting what is right and godly. It also speaks out when others stand up for the truth and biblical morality. To be praiseworthy is when we do not remain quiet to commend and reinforce moral ascendancy.

We are praiseworthy when we know how to discriminate right from wrong. The object of our praise is not self. It is not our accomplishments and personal goodness. God deserves and is worthy of our praise.

Being praiseworthy is not a one-time expression of praise. Apostle Paul says we must think and meditate on these things. Meditation is an ongoing process of appreciating and enjoying God’s goodness and the opportunities He has given us.

Meditating on what is praiseworthy is recognizing and thanking God for all the things, good or bad, knowing that He will “work all things together for good to those who love the Lord.”

Believers must not allow the depressing, unimaginable, and evil things to drown out our excitement in praising God. It is also praiseworthy to call out sin and evil with disdain but always seasoned with grace. There is a time and a place to give criticism that edifies. It is necessary and can be considered as praiseworthy.

Conclusion

Godly life is having a heart and mind surrendered to the Holy Spirit. This is the way to reveal the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:23, 24. Every believer has this fruit (love) that manifests in 9 virtues worthy of praise. Every child of God has the opportunity and the reason to be worthy of praise.
